So I’ve started a new job between finishing book 1 and today. It’s a good job. A temporary contract, but it’s paying the bills and keeping my nose above the water. Keeps me near computers which is nice, means I can slip in occasional bits of free time to work on odds and ends things. Like the building blocks for my second book.
I’m doing things a bit more detailed this time around. It’s going to be a little less of an intense book than my first one was. Much more character driven. Not that I don’t think the first one was, but it was very much more action driven than this one will be.
So that said, I want to make sure I’ve got things laid out as far as my roadmap from Chapter 1 to The End. My tendency is to be very fast and loose with things, but I know that doesn’t always work out the best. Pacing can be an issue. So I want to make sure my pace is hitting the right beats with this next book. With luck I can make a better impression, develop the crew of the Odyssey better, and set myself up for the continuation of the series. When I originally started the idea of Star Odyssey, it was meant to be just a kind of be a fun book that I could sell, but the further I move forward with it, the more I can see myself developing the universe and characters within it.
It’s not just a library padder anymore, it’s a full on project, so I’m treating it that. As a result I’m trying to put a more professional spin to my approach. Laying things out beforehand and not giving in to as many impulsive spur of the moment ideas. Ideally this will pay bigger dividends on the back end for everyone involved. For you guys (the readers) it’ll mean a better book and better product, and for me it’ll mean a better story and creation process.
Ok, that’s enough rambling for now. Enjoy your weekends everyone.
